vPCR Tools
vPCR is similar to qPCR. It is a quantitative measurement of a target that is known in advance. The difference between them is that with vPCR, a pre-treatment is carried out, that selects the viable fraction (the v in vPCR stands for ‘viable’). This fraction contains both living active cells and viable, inactive cells such as spores.

vPCR is always performed in combination with qPCR. The technique is similar to the culturing technique, but the advantage of vPCR is that, like qPCR, it is based on genetic material. Therefore, there are no restrictions with regard to culturability.
vPCR samples do need to be shipped freshly and cannot be fixated.
All benefits listed
- Culture-independent: approximately 1% of the microorganisms are culturable. qPCR and NGS are culture-independent and therefore enables us to detect microorganisms, that otherwise remain ‘unseen’.
- Options: we can perform any analysis in terms of microbial groups (for example, bacteria), species (for example Pseudomonas aeruginosa), or microbial conversion (for example, sulphate reduction).
- Online data: results are determined online and processed automatically using software tools. Therefore, the results are not susceptible to personal interpretation.
- Quality control: Internal controls are included in all analyses to determine the quality of the analyses.
- Suitable for all matrices (water, gas, soil and air).
