British Columbia’s Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MoTI) is about to launch a pilot project consisting of two new high-tech wildlife detection systems on Highway 3. The system, designed by PBX Engineering, will be used to help warn motorists when wildlife is on or near the highway.

The pilot project consists of installations at two locations on Highway 3. The first location, the Elko site, is positioned approximately 1 km east of Elko. The second location (Michel site) is located approximately 2 km east of Sparwood. These locations were selected by MoTI for the pilot systems due to the of high numbers of elk and deer, which often wander onto the highway and have the potential to cause serious crashes.
