Specific Process Benefits
The technology works without a return of activated sludge into the biological clarification stage. WSB clean pro utilizes a biofilm with a thin layer thickness and high cell density as opposed to other biofilm processes, such as trickling filters, biological contactors or continuously submerged packed beds. Its specific properties are the basis for the following process benefits:
- Nitrification at temperatures far below 12 °C
- Simultaneous nitrification and de-nitrification of at least 30 to 50%
- Low secondary sludge occurrence and low sludge production
- Microbiological elimination of pathogenic germs
- Adaptation of the micro-organisms to toxic materials
- No occurrence of process problems in strongly under-utilized plants
- Improved oxygen utilization in the floating bed
WSB clean pro is designed for the treatment of domestic waste water according to the valid ATV process and data sheets.
Cleaning Performance
The first stage in the clarification process is the sludge accrual tank. It collects the primary sludge before the domestic waste water reaches the pre-clarification. Here, the sinkable materials are held back. The mechanically pre-processed waste water is now fed to the biological clarification stage. Its fully biological clarification principle is based on the biofilm process. Micro-organisms settle on plastic carrier material and take on the organic load in the waste water in order to change it into ecologically harmless metabolism products. The carrier material is based on polyethylene and has a specific surface of less than 350 or up to 500 m²/m³.
Oxygen regulates waste water purification.
Oxygen is needed for the clarification process. This compressed air is produced by means of a compressor and distributed in the waste water as fine bubbles by a membrane pipe aerator. Through that procedure, surplus and/or dead micro-organisms are removed and subsequently collected as sludge in the final sedimentation tank, from where the transport into the sludge accrual tank occurs in a time-controlled manner. It being the last step in the cleaning process, the bottom of the final sedimentation has a truncated cone or sludge-collecting gutter where the occurring sludge is collected and removed by immersion pumps or other sludge-removing systems. From the final sedimentation, the biologically cleaned waste water finally reaches the runoff ditch via a discharge device.
Optimal operation with minimal energy consumption.
WSB clean pro is equipped with a control unit for the power supply as well as the automatic control of the compressor and immersion pumps in the final sedimentation. In order for the optimal operation to occur at minimum energy consumption, the aerator works intermittently, with changing operation and recess times. The actual operating parameters can be precisely defined taking into account the varying waste water accruals during the course of the day. The operational cycle of the immersion pump is designed so that the pending clarification sludge is completely pumped out of the biological cleaning tank.
Individually adjustable sludge accrual time.
As a result of nitrification, the formation of floating sludge may occur in the final sedimentation. In order to prevent sludge drifting, WSB clean pro is equipped with a floating sludge extraction system. In the corresponding sludge accrual tank there is capacity for approx. three to four months of accrual. For this time period, the total sludge accrual is approx. 0.96 l/(E*d). The precise sludge accrual time is dependent on the degree of utilization and is subsequently determined during operation.
Sedimentation tank: following the influx of waste ...
- Sedimentation tank: following the influx of waste water, the coarse particles settle here - in the same way as the sludge coming from the final sedimentation.
- Pre-clarification: In this 3-chamber system, the remaining solids are removed from the waste water.
- Biology: Biological clarification occurs in up to three cascades. In the first one, carbon is primarily decomposed. While the following cascades are being used primarily for nitrification.
- Final sedimentation: The biologically cleaned waste water is separated from surplus sludge. Pumps transport it into the sludge storage and the water is recycled into the natural water cycle.
- Piping: Through the pump-less flow-through with the cascade-principle, a waste water backflow is impossible even in the event of power failure.
- Control unit: The control unit controls the pump intervals and the compressor.
Modernization
During the modernization of existing plants, a further peculiarity of the fully biological technology becomes evident: Even in an existing space does the turbulent fluid bed biofilm process (WSB) reach its outstanding clarification performance. This is due to the fact that the carrier material has a large, biologically effective surface area. Thus, construction costs are reduced. In order to achieve a higher clarification quality, existing tanks can be reused.
Modular improvement of the cleaning performance.
In the course of modernization, all clarification units of WSB clean pro can be used separately, combined or in their entirety. Thanks to the high flexibility of the clarification technology, it can easily adapt to varying challenges. For the subsequent sewage treatment there are additional cleaning stages for denitrification, phosphorisation and disinfection.
Retrofit
In the course of the newest EU regulations, a great number of existing clarification plants have to prepare for the discharge values that are now being demanded. The flexibility of WSB clean pro is the ideal basis in order to achieve the demanded results in an efficient and cost-effective way.

The entire process is designed such that all its components can be used flexibly according to demand. In addition to the basic modules of the fully biological clarification solution, the separate expansion levels for de-nitrification, phosphorisation and disinfection are particularly of interest. Each one of these cleaning stages can be added in a modular fashion such that the respective pollutants are reliably eliminated from waste water.
