Electroplating sludge, a byproduct of the electroplating industry, is considered as hazardous waste because of the presence of several kinds of toxic heavy metals (HMs, i.e., Cr, Ni, Cu and Zn). The improper treatment of ES has resulted in the contamination of the environment and is ultimately harmful to the living biota.

There are a large number of electroplating industries. The effluent treatment plant of these electroplating industries produces a huge quantity of sludge, which basically comprises of metal precipitates. Since these metals being hazardous in nature, their disposal is the big problem. Technologies being widely used to solve the problem of disposal of hazardous wastes are stabilization and solidification. In stabilization some supporting media, binder or other modifier are added to the waste, so that the contaminated particles are fully or partially replaced with each other. The physical nature (engineering properties) of waste is altered by employing additives.

Metal bearing hydroxide sludge material is generated by the metal finishing industry. Environmental impact and resource conservation considerations have in recent years promoted development of alternatives to disposing of these hydroxide materials into hazardous waste containment sites. Separation and production of pure metal salts from mixed metal sludge’s is one such alternative. In many cases synthesis of these metal salts is very attractive economically, with purified forms demanding high market value. In other instances, metal compounds can be produced for reuse in the metal finishing circuit. Preliminary work on developing a series of selective precipitations for the separation and recovery of soluble metal components common to electroplating sludge’s has been completed.

The electroplating sludge contains lots of heavy metal which is harmful to environment and health. It is banned to landfill or dump directly. So it is necessary to dry firstly. What’s more, some plating sludge have precious metal, after drying it can be recycle and use.
