Nicholson Construction Company’s leadership in a wide range of grouting techniques has shown us that large sub-surface flows of water are at times difficult to stop by grouting with cement, soil, or chemical grouts. In these conditions, Nicholson has utilized an innovative technique known as asphalt grouting particularly in sealing flowing bodies of water in subsurface rock channels.

Asphalt grouting has also been used to plug leaks in cofferdams and in natural rock foundations.

Asphalt is a brown-to-black bituminous substance belonging to a group of solid or semisolid hydrocarbons. When it is used for grouting, it is generally heated to 400° or 450° F before injection. Additionally, asphalt emulsions may also been used for grouting with these being applied cold. In the emulsion the asphalt is dispersed in colloidal form in water. After injection, the emulsion must be broken so that the asphalt can coagulate to form an effective grout with special chemicals injected with the emulsion for this purpose.

Nicholson has the experience and value-added engineering capabilities to develop the most viable and cost-effective solution for the use of Asphalt Grouting techniques.
