Amey’s proud history began in 1921 when William Amey set up a quarrying company in Oxfordshire. During the Second World War we helped with the construction of RAF bases. Our involvement with the highways market began in 1959 with the supply of gravel for the M1 between London and Birmingham. We became a public company in the same year, with a share capital of £540,000.

We became a public company in the same year, with a share capital of £540,000.

In 1972, Ron Amey agreed to a takeover by Consolidated Goldfields, and the company was renamed Amey Roadstone Construction. In 1989, the company returned to private ownership and became known as Amey again.

In 1995, the company went back to the stock exchange with a strategic decision to focus on the provision of support services. We expanded into Private Finance Initiative (PFI) activity, which led to a gradual exit from the construction sector. Our position in support services was cemented in 1999 with the acquisition of Comax, the secure support services specialist. In 2000 our Stock Exchange listing changed to ‘support services’.

Dealing with rapid growth sharpened our focus. Our 2003 acquisition by Ferrovial, the Spanish infrastructure services company, provided a sound financial base on which to plan confidently for the future. It also gave us access to the skills and knowledge of a global infrastructure network. The 2006 acquisition of the highly respected design and build consultancy, Owen Williams, enabled us to offer clients a genuine end-to-end service from design and engineering right through to management and maintenance.

In 2009, we were awarded Network Rail’s Civil Examination Framework Agreement (CEFA) contracts across all five geographical areas of the UK. Further recognition came for our consulting capabilities, after being awarded three Highways Agency TechMAC contracts, making us the largest provider in the UK.

Being named the ACE/NCE Consultant of the Year 2010, demonstrated the success and growth of our consulting capability with over 2,500 specialists delivering innovative projects for our clients.

In 2010, we focused on growth and enhancing our capabilities through the acquisition of national rail consultancy and provider of professional rail services, WYG Rail to boost our rail offering. The acquisition of transport consultancy TPi increased our transport planning and traffic engineering consultancy capabilities to optimise delivery of strategic transport schemes across the UK. Finally the acquisition of Donarbon, a waste disposal services company to expand our waste management capabilities.

We entered the justice market in 2011, after the Ministry of Justice awarded GEOAmey three contracts to provide prison escort and custody services across the UK with the exception of London and the East of England. We also extended our presence in Wales after being awarded a new contract to manage, maintain and improve intelligent transport systems (ITS) across the country.

Our experience in delivering long term, large scale projects led to Amey being awarded the largest highways contract in Europe in 2009, working with Birmingham City Council to upgrade, maintain and manage the highways infrastructure for the next 25 years. We then went on to win the 25 year Streets Ahead contract in 2012, on behalf of Sheffield City Council.

As a business we have always focused on investing in our employees and supporting young talent. Recognising that investment in young people is critical to the development of the industry, we launched a national Apprenticeship Academy and enhanced our graduate programme committing that 2% of our employees will be apprentices and 1% as graduates to encourage more young people into our sectors and to future proof our industries. In 2012 we received a number of accolades including being named as a Top 100 Apprenticeship Employer by the National Apprenticeship Service and we achieved Investors in People Gold status and subsequently Champion Status, the first company in our industry to achieve this status.

In February 2013, Amey and Ferrovial Services announced their intention to buy Enterprise plc from 3i group, strengthening Ferrovial’s footprint in the UK.

In April 2013, following European regulatory approval, the deal completed and the process began to integrate Enterprise plc into Amey. Amey now employs over 21,000 employees, operates in nearly every area of the UK and is one of the most diverse companies in the sector providing an unrivalled range of services including; utilities, highways, waste management, rail, justice solutions, social housing and facilities management.
