Coastal Engineering Services
Ireland has a proportionately large coastline for a country of its size. The conditions, both physically and environmentally vary significantly from East to West, from the Atlantic to the Irish Sea, and from one individual location to another. In the East, the coastal zones are reasonably regular, an indication of their relative protection; in the West, the coastlines are very indented and rugged, evidence of their exposure to the extremes of the Atlantic weather. However, all our coastal areas are subject to the broad environmental changes that other countries are suffering. Much of the TOBIN experience has been developed through our portfolio of projects, many of which are marine engineering projects in themselves, or have involved marine elements.
Examples of marine project types that have entailed coastal engineering activities include proposed marina developments such as those at Rinville, in Galway Bay, and Westport, in Clew Bay. We have advised on coastal protection intervention at Renvyle in Connemara, and on local coastal community improvement or protection projects such as Raghly Harbour in County Sligo. A key project in the TOBIN portfolio is theNew Port Development at Galway Harbour. Coastal protection design is a significant and fundamental ingredient in the design of this project and TOBIN has utilised a variety of technologies as part of this design.
Many of the TOBIN wastewater projects have engaged in one way or another with the coast. Long sea outfalls are a common feature of many of our coastal wastewater treatment works. Protection works have been extensive along the coastal extents of these works and indeed some sections of the pipe networks feeding into these works along the coast. In addition, TOBIN has been involved in the design and construction of a number of armoured underwater pipelines, where sea crossings were necessary; some of these being located in highly exposed locations. The armoured pipeline crossings at Darby’s Point in Achill, is one such example, which was successfully completed in a location which experiences the greatest tidal velocities in the country.
