Combustion, Thermal Treatment, and Air Pollution Control Engineering
Focus process engineering services include technical evaluation, planning, and design of new environmental processes and modifications to existing processes. These services range from process troubleshooting and optimization to development of full process design packages and providing project management for detail design and procurement activities. Focus` engineering capabilities in developing design bases are supported by proprietary computer programs for waste characterization and process vent, combustion, and gas cleaning system design. These models allow for cost-effective screening of numerous design cases to ensure that design criteria are met. Focus` participation in the latter stages of a project including vendor evaluation, construction, and startup ensures that the integrity of the process design is maintained.
Emission Control Systems Engineering
Focus personnel have broad experience in providing process engineering services for air pollution control projects. Relevant applications include particulate collection, mercury and other metal controls, acid gas scrubbing, organic emissions controls, and nitrogen oxide emission controls.
Air pollution control operations include:
Carbon adsdorption systems
Condensers
Coolers
Quench chambers
Venturi scrubbers
Spray dryers
NOx control technologies
Dry sorbent injection
Baghouses
Packed and spray scrubbers
Ionizing wet scrubbers
Electrostatic precipitators
Fume incineration systems
Catalytic oxidizers
Waste Characterization Studies
For the proper design of any treatment system, an accurate accounting of all process inputs is an essential requirement. Focus has developed special expertise and engineering analytical tools to ensure that wastes are adequately characterized.
Air Emissions Inventories
Focus can develop an accurate characterization of air emissions from all plant sources for use in permitting or selecting and designing new control systems. Focus can assist the client in obtaining additional air emissions characterization data if necessary by developing monitoring or emission test plans.
Process Modeling
Focus has developed an integrated system of proprietary process computer modeling programs to use in designing and evaluating a wide variety of thermal treatment, air pollution control, and general chemical processing systems. Focus in-house process engineering models include the following, among others:
Combustion system mass and energy balance model (CMEB)
Air pollution control system mass and energy balance model (AMEB)
Plume suppression mass and energy balance model (PLUME)
Process vent system model (VENT)
Quench chamber residence time model (QUENCH)
Other models are used for estimating process air emissions, fugitive emissions from contaminated soil, and air dispersion. Focus also licenses a number of other process modeling software packages for specific unit operations such as packed column design. Focus can create spreadsheet models for other processes to support optimization, troubleshooting, or upgrade design projects.
Design Basis Development
Focus recognizes the importance of the design basis in developing a process design that will result in a system that fully meets the client`s expectations.
Regulatory Design Basis
Focus will conduct an in-depth review of potentially applicable federal, state, and local regulations as they apply to the specific process. Both current and anticipated future regulatory requirements will be identified which specifically relate to the site and process. Our regulatory experience assures that all stipulated emission standards, performance criteria, and operational controls/features are determined.
Process Design Basis
Focus` development of a process design basis typically involves completion of the following tasks:
Design and operational objectives review
Waste characterization
Heat and mass balance preparation
Conceptual process design development.
Focus will take this information and, along with criteria developed during the regulatory design basis preparation, generate a summary of the system operating parameters and constraints. Focus will analyze this summary for operational inconsistencies and recommend changes to the appropriate goals and objectives.
Process Design
Focus personnel are nationally recognized in process design of thermal treatment and air pollution control systems, and also have considerable experience in other areas of environmental control and waste treatment processes. Focus` combination of hands-on, consulting and design experience leads to a process design that meets the owner’s operating objectives and all applicable regulations.
Following development of a design basis and evaluation and selection of process technology, Focus prepares a process design package that can include any or all of the following drawings:
Block flow diagram
Process flow diagrams (PFDs)
Process control diagrams (PCDs)
Piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs)
Equipment layout drawing
Equipment elevation drawings
Electrical one-line diagram
Control logic diagram
In addition to the drawings listed above, a complete process design package typically includes the following engineering documents:
Process description
Process control description
Equipment list
Instrument list
Equipment specifications
Instrument specifications
Technical Support for Operations
Focus offers comprehensive technical support services to enhance the operating efficiency of new and existing environmental and production process systems while maintaining regulatory compliance and process safety.
Design, Procurement, and Construction Services
Focus can support the implementation of capital projects through process design, detail design, procurement, construction, and startup. This ensures the integrity of the process design and that regulatory requirements are met.
