Conditioning of Biomass
Our solutions make use of a proven conditioning technology to grind and dry biomass into a fine powder, having around 10% moisture content, and whose particle size can be reduced down to 100 microns. The technology combines these operations into a process that uses less than a third of the energy consumed by conventional dryers. The drying process is electrically driven and does not rely on the combustion of fuels for any heat input. There are no flue gases to treat, as in conventional dryers.
Rather, our solutions rely on kinetic energy to fracture the biomass through a dry beating process in which a large airflow is brought into contact with the material. The air and particles are subsequently separated, producing a dry material.
Lakson’s biomass conditioning solutions have the following advantages:
- small footprint (compact solution)
- no carbon footprint, as no fuel is burned
- lower capital and operational costs relative to conventional systems
- fully automated system
Biomass is organic matter that is usually sourced from waste streams in a number of industries, including:
- Forestry – biomass includes bark, branches, chips, sawdust etc.
- Agricultural – biomass includes animal manure, plant stem etc.
In its raw form, biomass is poorly suited as a source of energy for a thermal process. This is generally due to the typically high moisture content and particle size and, in some cases, high ash content.
Lakson offers biomass conditioning solutions that can grind and dry raw biomass into a dry/fine powder having excellent combustion characteristics.
