Consolidation grouting is a general term for grouting that is carried out within rock masses with the intent of filling rock mass discontinuities. Depending on the intent and timing of the grouting, any of the following grouting techniques may be consolidation grouting: Pre-excavation grouting, post-excavation grouting, grout curtains, water cut-off grouting.

The intent of the grouting is to fill discontinuities within the rock mass, often to reduce groundwater infiltration into an underground structure, mine, or beneath a structure. Consolidation grouting consists of injecting a grout material into rock discontinuities to fill these discontinuities and fill the pathways through which liquids (generally water) or gases can migrate. With grout filling the rock discontinuities, the hydraulic gradient is reduced as water moves through the grout, ultimately reducing or stopping water inflow or migration.

Consolidation grouting programs may be carried out utilizing both cementatious and chemical grouts.
