Round collected refuse (RCR) This is a service provided by Pikitup, once a week, to all the citizens living in formal dwellings.
Business waste Means waste other than hazardous waste , healthcare risk waste, building waste, industrial waste and garden refuse. This waste type is normally generated on premises used for non residential purposes.
Special waste
This type of waste consists of liquid, sludge or solid substances resulting from manufacturing processes, industrial treatment or pre-treatment for disposal purposes of any industrial or mining liquid waste, which may not be discharged into a drain or sewer .
Landfill Sites
Pikitup manages 4 landfill sites which are permitted in terms of clause 20(1) of the Environmental Conservation Act 73 of 1989. All solid waste, excluding medical and hazardous waste is accepted at the landfill sites for disposal.
Garden Sites
Ratepayers deposit garden refuse at the garden refuse sites across the city. Pikitup is currently in the process of upgrading existing and establishing new garden sites.
Green Waste Recycling

Street Cleaning
More than R 170 million is spent per annum on litter picking and street cleaning throughout the city of Johannesburg. Increased efforts by Pikitup in terms of its recycling and waste education programme could minimize the negative effect on the budget and the City’s image.
Community Education
Making communities aware of ways in which to handle waste and also to teach them about the hazards of not treating waste correctly.
Environmental Awareness
As part of the Executive Mayor`s Clean and Green campaign Pikitup has commenced with environmental education awareness aimed at residents, traders, commuters, taxi operators and hawkers in the inner city.

Services provided on a daily basis to supermarkets, restaurants and other related industries.
Illegal Dumping
The removal of illegal dumping costs the company in the region of R58 million per annum. This type of dumping occurs when big quantities of refuse are dumped in open spaces by both business and the community at large.
Recycling Waste
Minimization and recycling has become an important aspect of Pikitup’s business. Not only is much time spent on education, but also on introducing initiatives that will in the longer term contribute to sustainable waste management efforts.
