Determination of Safety Characteristics of Combustible Substances Service
For safe use of combustible substances as well as for the design of explosion-protected equipment and protective systems the knowledge of properties, which are described by safety characteristics, is required. These characteristics are no physical constants, but conventional quantities. The reproducibility and the comparability of these values are closely linked with special determined testing procedures.
Are determined by IBExU on the basis of applicable norms and directives, for example:
Combustible dusts
- Dust Explosibility, including the:
- Maximum explosion pressure
- Maximum rate of pressure rise
- KSt-value / Dust Explosion Class
- Lower explosion limit
- Limiting oxygen concentration
- Minimum ignition energy
- Ignition temperature
- Smoulder temperature
- Autoignition temperature
- Burning behaviour / flammability
- Electrostatic charging and electrical resistance
- Exothermic decomposition
- Deflagration
- Impact sensitivity
Combustible gases and liquids
- Flash point
- Lower and upper explosion limits
- Explosion points
- Limiting oxygen concentration
- Maximum explosion pressure
- Maximum rate of pressure rise, KG-value
- Ignition temperature
- Maximum Experimental Safe Gap
- Exothermic decomposition
Hybrid mixtures as well as mists/aerosols of combustible liquids
- Explosibility
- Maximum explosion pressure
- Maximum rate of pressure rise
- Lower explosion limit
The safety characteristics, especially of combustible gases and liquids, can also be determined by IBExU under “non-atmospheric conditions” (increased mixture pressure and/or mixture temperature, increased content of oxygen, special oxidants, silicium organic compounds). For these fields, IBExU developed special procedures. IBExU also carries out safety tests according to special standards, e. g. regarding the classification according to “Hazardous Materials Regulation” or “Hazardous Materials Transportation Act”.
