It works on the ground and in partnership with schools, communities, the long-term unemployed, volunteers and businesses to develop skills and deliver a range of environmental training.
Schools
The UK government recognises the importance of maintaining the environment and has therefore set up the National Framework for Sustainable Schools. This aims for all schools to be models of best environmental practice and practitioners of sustainable development by 2020.
Education in responsible environmental citizenship and carbon management is essential to help ensure a low-carbon future across Merseyside. Groundwork Merseyside provides a range of educational packages offering guidance and advice on the National Framework to schools that are looking to encompass and promote the environmental agenda.
Groundwork advisers can provide a range of support to schools that will assist them in achieving Eco-School status. These include undertaking resource efficiency reviews of buildings, calculating carbon footprints and identifying environmental action plans with associated carbon reductions and costs. Additionally, our landscape architects can help to upgrade and improve school grounds and learning landscapes.
Training
Groundwork Merseyside offers a wide range of training opportunities for businesses, including accredited courses on environmental awareness; waste awareness; health and safety issues; and the implementation of environmental management systems. For a limited time, the organisation can offer funding for training courses to those businesses that sign up to the ENWORKS business support programme.
Skills
Unemployment is a serious contributor to the social and physical degradation of communities. In many cases, whole communities are stuck in a cycle of low prospects, which reduces self-esteem and leads to low levels of employment. By arming people with new skills, Groundwork Merseyside is working to break this cycle. We offer volunteering, skills development and apprenticeships in green-collar industries and boost opportunities for the region's young and long-term unemployed.
