More than ever, the importance of the environment as far as safeguard, contaminated site decommissioning, recycling of disused areas and sustainable economic development are concerned, is highlighted by the coming into force of different decrees: the Legislative Decree n. 152 dated April 2006, development of the previous Legislative Decree n. 22 dated February 5th, 1997 and of the Ministerial Decree n. 471 dated October 25th, 1999, governing the development of environment activities and dictating the “regulations relating to the environment”.

REMEDIATION OF CONTAMINATED SITES
SUBSURFACE ENVIRONMENTAL SPECIFICATION
The preliminary research represents the first step for the site environmental specification. It includes the reconstruction of past and present uses of the sites through collecting bibliographic material, inspecting and surveying and searching the contamination sources and the anthropic and environmental receptors. The geophysical indirect researches are a preliminary evaluation instrument of the studied subsurface structural features which enable to detect and define the nature of possible services and filled-in infrastructures.

Then, the geognostic researches enable to define the soil lithostatigraphy and the quality features of the unsaturated and saturated subsurface (aquifers): soil gas survey – tests and piezometers. Finally, the data drawing up and interpretation enable to define the mechanism of fluid spreading (water, air and contaminating agents) in the porous medium: lab chemical analysis – tests in situ – geology and hydrogeology.

SITE SPECIFIC RISK ANALYSIS
The site specific risk analysis is carried out by means of a dedicated software (RBCA, etc.)

PLANNING AND INSTALLING OF REMEDIATION SYSTEMS
The high professionalism and experience of the environment unit offer to Petroltecnica clients different advantages: use of innovative strategies, advanced technology applications and optimized solutions in planning, creating and controlling the remediation systems.

The remediation of contaminated sites by hydrocarbons and/or other chemicals can be carried out in situ, on site or off site, according to the geologic/hydrogeological features of the site and to the nature and concentration of the contaminating agents. In situ technologies: soil vapour extraction, bioventing, bioremediation, air sparging, supernatant product recovery, multiphase extraction, reactive permeable barriers, in situ chemical oxidation. On site and off site technologies: landfarming, biopile treatment, soil washing, thermal treatments, pump & treat.

MONITORING  DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT
This step is carried out by sampling and analysing soils, waters and gases through inspections, tests, surveys and measures in site

TRAINING
The staff training is carried out by means of refresher seminars on techno-professional subjects and workplace safety, through lessons on theory and field visits.
