CERC has been providing consultancy services to clients for over 25 years. We’re an independent company with expertise in atmospheric flows and dispersion, well established as an international leader in air quality consultancy. Our client portfolio includes industry, property developers, planners, regulators, law firms, central and local government, universities and consultancies. Whether the focus is human health, amenity or ecosystems, we are highly proficient in applying ADMS and other software tools for the assessment of impacts, or simply providing expert advice. As well as air quality, we apply our specialised knowledge to wind energy calculations and growing concerns relating to the urban environment. We’re adept at coming up with tailored solutions to more unusual challenges.
With its expertise in calculating and managing emissions data, CERC offers a range of services to assess greenhouse gas emissions, from determining the carbon footprint of a single industrial process, to compiling a greenhouse gas inventory for a whole geographical area. CERC uses methods and emission factors laid out by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Emissions from transport, industrial, heating and agricultural activities are calculated and stored using the EMIT software package.
Alongside core activities of developing air quality modelling software and providing environmental consultancy services, CERC take an active role in UK and international scientific research activities. 2022 was a busy year for CERC`s research team, with ten published co-author journal articles.
New software development and evaluation was covered in two papers. The improved elevated roads modelling implemented in ADMS-Urban and ADMS-Roads, commissioned by Highways England (now National Highways), was discussed...
CERC Consultants have been working with City of York Council, UK, who are considering additional measures for smoke control actions, including a potential extension of the city`s Smoke Control Area (SCA).
To aid the Council`s decision-making, we generated GIS datasets to provide insights into solid fuel use across York. Fuel use data from Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) and Council data for wood burner installations were mapped using address locations from the Local Land and Property Gazetteer.
Key...
As part of an emergency transport response to the pandemic, Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs) have been introduced in many London Boroughs, to help people safely walk, cycle and use public transport.
CERC consultants have been evaluating the air quality impact of LTN schemes, including five schemes in Lambeth and the Walworth and Dulwich schemes in Southwark. Using local traffic monitoring data as input, the modelling assessments consider pre-scheme and post-scheme scenarios to assess the air quality impact of...
The City of London has been designated as an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) so the Corporation is required to submit an Annual Air Quality Status Report outlining progress towards their Air Quality Strategy aims. One aim is that nitrogen dioxide should meet health-based Limit Values and WHO Guidelines in over 90% of the Square Mile by 2025. In order to evaluate progress, CERC consultants carried out an assessment of nitrogen dioxide concentrations in the City in 2019. This was done by means of a combination...
The Local Government Technical Advisers Group (LGTAG) President`s conference will be held over three days online between 15th and 17th June 2021.
CERC is sponsoring Day 1 / Session 2 of the event and giving a presentation on Air Quality Modelling for Kensington & Chelsea, carried out by the CERC consultancy team to support Kensington & Chelsea`s decision-making for Air Quality Action Plans and planning applications.
There are both morning and afternoon sessions on the 15th and 16th June, and a final...
CERC was commissioned to carry out a novel assessment of the impact of plumes of cold air from an array of Air Source heat Pumps (ASHPs) on the surrounding air temperature.
In work commissioned by Sustainable Energy Ltd, the CERC consultancy team used ADMS 5 and the dense gas dispersion model GASTAR to carry out dispersion modelling of the plumes of cold air. A single elevated jet, representing the emissions from a single ASHP unit, was represented in each model, and plume centreline height and temperature were...
The CERC consultancy team compiled annual monitoring data statistics for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) diffusion tube and continuous monitoring as part of the London Borough of Hackney`s yearly report to the Greater London Authority.
The work involved the preparation of tables and graphs presenting monitoring results in line with the Annual Status Report (part of London Local Air Quality Management). CERC presented and interpreted year-on-year trends highlighted by the data and carried out QA and QC, including compilatio...
