Environmental Engineering Services
NGI plays a central role in the remediation of contaminated soil, groundwater, marine sediments and rock. We develop new methods for investigation, risk assessment and remediation associated with the environment. Expertise within geotechnics, geology, environmental chemistry, hydrogeology, microbiology, instrumentation and monitoring places NGI in a unique position to provide innovative and sound solutions for the environment.
We offer an extensive range of geoscientific services in environmental technology. NGI is an attractive partner for developers, authorities, consultants and contractors. About 20 % of NGI`s turnover is for services to the environment, not including our work on natural hazards. We have expertise to survey and rehabilitate harbours, airports, railway and industrial areas, refuse dumps and landfills.
NGI delivers
- investigation of contaminated soil groundwater and sediments
- laboratory testing and chemical analysis of contaminated materials
- risk analysis and impact studies
- evaluation and design of measures to protect the environment and natural resources
- monitoring and pollution control
- design of landfills and waste disposals
- analysis of geo-biological functions in sediments
- health, environment and safety planning
Competence
Since the mid-1980`s, NGI has provided environmental expertise in Norway and abroad. NGI seeks to achieve sustainable and cost-effective solutions for the rehabilitation and clean-up of contaminated soil, groundwater and marine sediments. Our environmental laboratory is accredited by the Norwegian Accreditation body. Mallscale laboratory testing help develop the effect and effectiveness of different mitigation measures.
State-of-the-art expertise
In the 1990`s NGI introduced in-situ biological remediation methods for oil and creosote, for example at the site of the Oslo Airport Gardermoen, and at the Håkonsvern Marine Base in Bergen. NGI also developed know-how on the planning and mapping of landfills, leakage testing and risk assessment, as well as the recovery of gas from landfills.
NGI can help with hydrogeological expertise on groundwater flow in soil and rock. This has key significance for all underground work, such as tunnels and major excavations. NGI is currently involved in major projects related to the remediation of polluted marine sediments. The understanding of the mechanisms that influence the diffusion of contaminants and the methods that can effectively reduce spreading is essential.
NGI cooperates with port and water resource agencies and regulatory authorities. A major project has been the clean-up of the polluted sediments in the Oslo harbour. Methods, equipment and materials for dredging, handling, deposition and safe cover of contaminated marine sediments were essential issues in the project.
Development of the geosciences
NGI conducts research programmes in environmental technology, and collaborates with research organisations all over the world. In May 2008, the 5th International Sed Net Conference was hosted in Oslo.
NGI`s environmental laboratory has long experience with advanced testing of contaminated soils.
