Environmental Management Systems
Environmental Management Systems (EMS) are becoming as widespread as quality management systems or health and safety systems. So much so, not having an EMS is increasingly becoming a determining factor in appointing a supplier or contractor. Consumers are also increasingly choosing the “green” or “ethical” option.
An EMS is a business tool that:
- evaluates the environmental impact of an activity, product or service;
- implements improvements programmes and verifies their effectiveness; and
- identifies cost saving measures derived from improved efficiencies.
Some organisations perceive the implementation of another system as a burden, whereas actually an EMS can operate alongside existing systems in an integrated and streamlined way. The key to implementing a successful EMS is to ensure that it does not become a barrier to what you are actually trying to do: run you business.

There is value in obtaining independent verification of your EMS, such as through ISO14001 and EMAS. However, this may not be the best approach in all circumstances.
