Environmental Management Systems
From EMS
Environmental Management Systems (EMS) are designed to help organisations reduce environmental impacts, increase compliance with legislation, and reduce wastage of resources. An EMS helps to develop, implement, manage, coordinate and monitor environmental policies by providing traceablility throughout a manufacturing lifecycle and enabling accounting techniques to be used to keep track of inputs, outputs, energy and water consumption. emissions and wastage.

There are two internationally recognised systems in common use by UK companies: International Organisation for Standardisation ISO14001 and the EU Eco Managament and Audit Scheme (EMAS).
As part of an EMS it is essential to understand and minimise the environmental impacts of inputs used by an organistion during its day to day business. The easiest way to demonstrate and audit these impacts is if the suppliers also have a fully implemented EMS. Therefore it is beoming increasingly common for larger, environmentally aware companies to require their suppliers to implement an EMS so that they can readily supply data on the environmental footprint of their goods and allow the purchasing company to audit their suppliers.
Larger organisations like power stations, cement plants and chemical industries also have to comply with limits placed upon them by the EU on their emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and two more powerful greenhouse gases, nitrous oxide (N2O) and perfluorocarbons (PFCs). These emissions are regulated under the EU-ETS. Such organistaions will find it much easier to comply with the EU-ETS if they have previously installed an EMS such as ISO14001 as this provides an easier route to accounting for and reducing emissions which has a direct financial benefit through the reduced purchase or increased sale of EU ETS Allowances.
SES is a certified installer of the ISO14001 Environmental Management System. We use internationally recognised Life Cycle Analysis databases such as Ecoinvent Life Cycle Inventory to determine the carbon impacts of a company's operation from input to output.
