Facilities and Non Destructive Testing Services

SHARE

Nova`s experienced engineers and technical staff can perform a comprehensive list of nondestructive and specialty facilities testin6 that can be of tremendous value to building owners. Property managers and contractors. These services include nondestructive materials testing and roofing/building envelope testing. These diagnostic tools can be used to evaluate the current condition. The cause and extent of distress in building and civil structure components novas experienced technical team can interpret the results and assist the project team with cost effective repair solutions.

Ground Penetrating Radar Testing Of Concrete

The StructureScan Mini HR is GSSI’s all-in-one high-resolution Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) system for concrete testing. With a 2600 MHz antenna, this handheld system locates rebar, conduits and post-tension strands to depths of up to 16 inches (40 cm). The StructureScan Mini HR and 3D software is excellent in developing an x-ray like image for any given depth. Ideal for complex areas, the StructureScan Mini HR can delineate small targets with superior vertical and horizontal resolution. This testing is typically used to evaluate the pattern and position of reinforcing steel for structural evaluations and also to avoid damaging these critical structural components during structural modifications or utility borings. The GPR has also been successfully used to locate concrete delaminations and to verify the presence of grout and tie reinforcement in concrete masonry construction.

Ultrasonic Testing

The nondestructive testing technique measures the velocity of compression stress waves traveling through concrete. The pulse velocity when properly analyzed are indices of the strength, density and quality of the concrete. NOVA’s experienced engineers have successfully used this nondestructive testing technique to evaluate the presence of honey combing, voids, cracks in concrete. A grid of straight and diagonal transmission tests can be used to define the extent of these discontinuities and limits of repair. This technique has also been successfully used in timber structures to define the limits of internal decay or insect damage. Ultrasonic testing can also be used in the evaluation of structural steel components to evaluate loss of section due to corrosion.

Impact Echo Testing Of Concrete

NOVA’S experienced staff also has the capability to perform impact echo testing to nondestructively evaluate the depth of concrete slabs. This technique has been used to nondestructively and confidently confirm slab thickness with a precision of 1/8 inch. This testing technique only requires one side access and can also be used to locate and define the extent of flaws, discontinuities, interlayer delaminations or voids.

Electronic Leak Detection (Eld) / Electronic Field Vector Mapping

When the inevitable leak occurs either before the building is occupied or after some years of maintenance, the only non-destructive methods of locating the point of entry were to implement compartmentalized flood testing or a “Trial and Error” technique. With innovative state-of-the-art leak detection equipment, electricity can now be utilized to follow the path of a leak and will pin-point its’ exact location without the application of thousands of gallons of water as used in traditional flood testing.

Water Infiltration Testing

The Architectural Aluminum Manufacturers Association (AAMA) 501.2, Field Check of Metal Storefronts, Curtain Walls, and Sloped Glazing Systems for Water Leakage describes the Water Intrusion Field Testing methodology which NOVA’s staff routinely performs. In addition, we can provide testing of windows, curtain wall and store front glazing systems per ASTM E783 and 1105.

Infra-red And Nuclear Surveys

NOVA also provides non-destructive testing to evaluate moisture intrusion such as infrared and nuclear surveys of existing roofing systems. These techniques are utilized to evaluate moisture in a membrane but also vertical systems. This testing helps determine where insulation may be wet or moist, which subsequently minimizes removal of insulation that may not be affected. It also helps identify moisture in vertical surfaces that may need maintenance and/or repair.

Wind Uplift Testing Per ASTM E-907

NOVA can provide, wind uplift testing per ASTM E-907 for new or existing roofs to determine if they will meet requirements outlined in the project specifications. This unit can also be utilized to meet Factory Mutual Insurance requirements.

Ligno-duo Tec Bw Moisture Meter

The Ligno-DuoTec BW Moisture Meter is a non-invasive meter with dual-depth measuring capabilities for Contractors, Floor Covering Installers and Restoration. The meter provides Moisture Contents/Relative Humidity for wood, bamboo, concrete, sheetrock, and other Building Materials. Ambient relative humidity and temperature can be measured with the BW. For restoration Dew Point and GPP are indicated (with RH BluePeg Sensor from Lignomat). The BW meter can also be used for in-situ moisture measurements of concrete, which conforms to ASTM F 2170.
