Geographic Information Systems (GIS) allow municipalities to easily access data formerly stored on hard-copy drawings, in spreadsheets or CAD files. Critical information about map elements can be accessed via a single digital interface that can be transmitted to work stations on a municipality`s computer network or across the internet. For example, using a mouse to select a sewer pipe can show the pipe`s diameter, length, material, year of installation, and direction of flow.
