• The first bottle banks appeared in 1977, and there are now roughly 50,000 in UK.
• For every tonne of recycled glass used, 1.2 tonnes of raw materials are preserved.
Quantifying the benefits
Closed loop recycling of one tonne of glass saves 0.37 tonnes of CO2e (open loop recycling saves 0.2 tonne). So Shanks, byrecycling 14,438 tonnes of glass in 2011, saves 5342 tonnes of CO2 each year based on the proportion of closed to open loop recycling.
This is the equivalent to:The equivalent emissions from driving 16 million miles
Enough CO2 to fill:
8.2 billion cans of coke
11.3 million wheelie bins
446,000 builders skips
2 millennium stadiums
Shanks has preserved 17,326 tonnes of rawmaterials through recycling glass in 2011
