Hand Arm Vibration (HAV): The use of some types of tools, for example, grinders, pneumatic hammers, impact wrenches and horticultural equipment can result in vibration being transmitted into the hand and arms of the users.Exposure to high levels of vibration over long periods can result in injury to the hand-arm system. The most common type of injury associated with the use of vibratory tools is Vibration White Finger (VWF). The results of an HSE survey shows that about 1.2 million people are subjected to vibration exposure above the recommended Action Level. Health and Safety law requires employers to ensure that their employees are protected by the 2005 Control of Vibration at Work Regulations.
The driving of vehicles such as dumpers, tractors and lift trucks can subject employees to Whole Body Vibration, which can cause low back pain and spinal damage.
