Landfill
The Drehid Facility is a waste management facility that officially opened in 2008. The facility has a waste licence to accept up to 360,000 tonnes of waste per annum for the landfilling of residual waste. This constitutes municipal, commercial and industrial waste.

The facility also has planning for a compost plant that is to be constructed early next year. It is licensed to accept 25,000 tonnes of brown bin waste per annum. The site is located in a remote part of south Kildare on cut away bog between the towns of Allenwood and Derrinturn.
Resource recovery
Although landfilling is currently the predominate activity, Bord na Mona has plans to develop the site as a Resource Recovery facility in order to comply with government policy and EU legislation on the diversion of waste to landfill. Any future plans would have to be approved by the relevant planning authority and the Environmental Protection Agency. It is Bord na Mona’s intention that additional activities proposed for the site e.g. composting would also operate under the 14001 standard
