Leachate is generated as a result of rain that percolates through decomposing solid waste in a landfill and flows out of the waste material.  This leachate is pumped out of the landfill and is either treated on-site and discharged to a stream or sewer, or it is trucked off-site for treatment.  Leachate must be treated to minimize the risk of contaminating groundwater or creating other environmental hazards.

There are three main types of technology that NSU uses to treat leachate wastewater:
