Legionella Risk Assessments
ACOP L8 requires that employers and responsible persons must have a suitable and sufficient legionella risk assessment carried out on their premises which should then be used to generate a written scheme for control incorporating the requirements laid out in the L8 document.
The risk assessment should also highlight areas of non compliance in design or construction of the system which may require remedial works to bring up to standard.
A comprehensive and competent risk assessment is the first step in your control regime. Competency being defined as function of training and experience means DMA does not allow risk assessors to undertake assessment works until they have had suitable experience with time served assessors after completion of their independent training, as only then do we consider them suitably experienced.
Our assessments are carried out with due reference to BS:8580:2010 “water quality –risk assessements for Legionella control”, the British Standard for risk assessment. A link to purchase this document is provided here. This standard provides guidance to what you should expect from your assessment and assessor.
As the risk assessment is one of the most important pieces of your control regime on which it will stand or fall. DMA would advise investigating thoroughly any potential suppliers of such systems.

- A DMA L8 risk assessment will provide you with a thorough overview of the potential legionella risks associated with your system including attaching risk ratings to each area assessed to allow prioritisation of any corrective works and actions.
- Provide guidance on how to eliminate or minimise the risks including remedial works where required.
- Provide a simplified schematic of the services
- Provide sufficient information to assist the responsible person in compiling the written scheme.
- DMA are happy to assist clients with the compiling and implementation of the written scheme if required.
The assessment will then highlight where remedial actions are required. In addressing the findings of the risk assessment and the written scheme responsible persons should be guided by the principle of designing out potential problems in the water system.
L8 monitoring programs
Once your assessment is complete DMA can provide a complete monitoring service or tailor a package to suit your requirements:
- Monthly monitoring of sentinel and other outlets and calorifiers
- Quarterly shower/spray outlet cleaning and disinfection and calorifier blowdowns
- 6 monthly water tank inspections and mains supply temperature monitoring.
- 6 monthly TMV servicing and slam testing
- L8 assessment reviews or audits
- logbooks
Each task generates a typed service sheet on both paper for the onsite logbook and also electronically which is maintained on our server so a backup copy is always available. No more illegible handwritten reports.
These reports will log all your relevant information, highlight issues of non compliance and suggest remedial actions where appropriate.
