The Low Carbon Sector Development Project was a Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) and European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) funded project which was an enhancement and extension of the cluster development programme. The cluster programme was supported and funded by the NWDA on an annual contract between 2002 and 2007.

The project concentrated on two main sub sectors:

  1. Energy (renewables, energy efficiency and low energy buildings)
  2. Water and wastewater technologies.

The project supported the environmental sector to achieve growth beyond that of the global market rate, by developing and exploiting the range of economic opportunities available to businesses. This was achieved by promotion of the sector in regional, national and international markets, optimising networking and individual business support by:

  • Providing strategic leadership to the sector
  • Gathering sector and market intelligence
  • Promoting the sector through exhibitions, supply chain directories, direct mail marketing, inward investment, trade magazine publications and international activities
  • Running events, workshops and meetings to support networking and innovation between the low carbon and environmental goods and services (LCEGS) companies and their markets
  • Providing individual technical business support for growing and expanding businesses in the sector.
