The aim of the BOHS Mentoring Programme directly aligns with two key objectives of the BOHS:

  1. To promote the profession of Occupational Hygiene
  2. To improve the practice of Occupational Hygiene and the knowledge, competence and standing of its practitioners

The mentoring process should be seen as a process of self-development and awareness. The mentee will assume the responsibility for driving the mentoring process.

As a mentee, it is your responsibility, with the help of your chosen mentor, to establish goals for your development and to manage the process so that you get what you need, both professionally and personally.

Facilitation of learning is perhaps the most important goal of the mentoring process. Mentoring can be challenging for a mentee precisely because it emphasises learning and growth.

Good mentors inspire their mentees to learn and grow. They encourage and play the role of the objective supporter and sounding board.

BOHS has recognised the potential for growth of individual members and a mentor can help stimulate that potential. In your role as mentor you will, among other things, listen, ask questions, give feedback, or assign a developmental activity. Your role is not to solve problems but to guide and give confidence to help the mentees with their development.
