Bayern - New Materials Cluster Service
Bavaria has a leading position internationally in "new materials", with the best prerequisites to continue playing a leading role in the future. About one million employees in 4,000 companies provide innovative developments that are found in almost all industries — from vehicle construction to wind turbines. The Bavarian New Materials Cluster aims to further boost the competitiveness of the Bavarian economy and stimulate growth.
"New materials" are a cross-sectional technology of high economic importance. Progress in material development is indispensable for numerous product and system innovations. This applies to fibre composites, which have long since been indispensable in many areas of vehicle construction and aviation, as well as technical ceramics for high-temperature lightweight construction or materials for printed electronics, for example in OLEDs.
Hand in hand for material innovation
Especially in the materials sector, new developments require a close and target-oriented cooperation between different technologies and industries at an early stage. The characteristics of a component are inextricably linked to the material properties and the manufacturing processes. Therefore, materials cannot be considered on their own. Only the triad of material, process technology and design leads to successful innovations. Consequently, a trusting cooperation along the process and value chains as well as the sharing of knowledge across industries is necessary.
The New Materials Cluster brings together companies and scientific institutes from a wide range of industries. Today, more than 600 companies and scientific institutes are part of the extensive network. Together with its stakeholders, partners and the advisory board, the cluster analyses technology trends, raises innovation potential in materials and processes and helps its stakeholders to find partners for new product and project ideas. The cluster is an important source of inspiration for new ideas, closes gaps in value chains and establishes the necessary regional, national and international networks. The New Materials Cluster operates in seven subject areas:
- Metallic lightweight materials
- Fibre composites
- Polymer properties and processing
- Materials used in the large-area processing of electronics
- Technical ceramics and glasses
- Functionalised surfaces
- Technical textiles
Our mission
"New Materials — Technologies for Innovations" – Under this guiding principle, the New Materials Cluster sees itself as an information, communication and technology platform for innovations with new materials in Bavaria. With its extensive networks, the cluster creates added value for industry, research, politics and society through
- Initiation and management of networks
- Targeted information and knowledge transfer
- Strategy advice for cooperative innovations
- Customer-specific project support
Our goal
By bringing together various industry players and building and maintaining a sustainable network in the field of new materials, we are improving the location conditions for the industry in Bavaria.
To do this, we use all our energy: we know our clients, partners and their needs. We link research with industry. We provide information, examine value chains and look at how they work. We bring together suitable partners — creating added value for the entire material industry.
