SHARE

The Stablex approach uses precise laboratory analyses to select the appropriate physical and chemical treatments, followed by stabilization and solidification, to produce an environmentally secure non-leachable material. This approach represents the current state-of-the-art in inorganic treatment and disposal technology.

PRE-ACCEPTANCE CHARACTERIZATION
Laboratory analyses define required safety and treatment steps. A waste profile is established to determine the precise chemical and physical properties of the material. These are then used to determine acceptability, specific treatment processes and necessary safety measures for reception of the material.

PHYSICAL TREATMENT
Waste is often received in a form which is not particularly amenable to the chemical treatment process. Consequently, some wastes may require crushing and/or shredding for size reduction. This step allows such materials to be placed into a slurry, which is an integral part of the Stablex wet treatment process.

CHEMICAL TREATMENT
Once the waste has been physically sized, we employ one of a variety of chemical treatments (oxidation, reduction, neutralization) to produce a more stable product and decrease the mobility of the contaminants.

PRECIPITATION
An integral part of Stablex`s processes is to reduce the toxicity and leachability of the residue through chemical precipitation, which results in an insoluble product. The new product`s insolubility is critical to the success of the subsequent stabilization/fixation phase.

STABILIZATION / FIXATION
Stablex fixation reagents bind contaminants into mixed silicates, and trap insoluble precipitates produced during treatment within a three-dimensional silicate lattice, resulting in an environmentally stable compound.

PLACEMENT / SOLIDIFICATION
The transformed neutralized material is placed in carefully engineered and monitored disposal cells in order to preclude any possibility of environmental contamination into the foreseeable future.  The Stablex product cures over a period of many hours, to a compressive strength comparable to that of a lean concrete.
