Processing of Roofing Paper

SHARE

At the Lägerdorf site, Geocycle offers you residue-free processing of your roofing paper. Roofing paper is often used as the top roof layer for smaller roofs. Roofing paper is also often used as a second water collection layer under the tiles. The two main different categories are bituminous and tar-based roofing papers. Tar-based roofing paper is no longer being manufactured but is generated in the course of dismantling or demolition projects. Given that coal tar contains polluting agents such as PACs (polycyclical aromatic hydrocarbons = compounds consisting in several `condensed` benzene rings), tar paper is considered hazardous waste and is thus subject to special regulations.

Since the entry into force of the Technical Guideline for Residential Waste Glossary (TASI) in June 2005, landfilling roofing paper is no longer permitted in the Federal Republic of Germany. Facing a lack of disposal solutions, Geocycle performed a series of operational trials to check the suitability of the roofing paper material flow for co-processing in the Holcim cement plant Lägerdorf already from the beginning of 2005. Based on these operational trials, Geocycle succeeded in overcoming the technical challenges and is now able to condition the material in such a manner that it can be processed in the Lägerdorf cement plant. The operating capacity of the material was increased from year to year. In 2009, over 30,000 tons of roofing paper were processed completely and in a sustainable manner.
