Radiation & Environmental Assessment Program (REAP)
This program encompasses field and analytical studies of environmental samples such as soil, water, air, flora, fauna and sediment samples. It also involves determination of Radon and Thoron progeny levels. The purpose of the program is to assess the potential negative radiation impact on the environment, workers and members of the public from the activities that are carried out by companies and industries involved in the processing of radioactive contaminated materials. The program usually identifies and monitors the release of radionuclide into the environment by conducting field surveillance and analyzing environmental samples. At a pre-operational stage, the surveillance involves determination of background activities in various environmental media. At the operational stage, the collected data is compared with the baseline data to establish the level of exposure.
