Cardno"s structural engineering capabilities include extensive expertise in the refurbishment and structural repair of all types of structures. Cardno has established a reputation for successfully undertaking project management of both small and large projects in this field. This regularly includes the evaluation of existing structures and the investigation and design of remedial measures for structures experiencing distress, and sometimes for enhancing load carrying capacity. Causes of distress may range from foundation failure and subsidence to earthquake damage, fire, general structural deficiencies, corrosion and material deterioration associated with ageing.

Repairs to reinforced concrete elements of this multi-storey block of apartments were carried out, along with a waterproof membrane replacement to the roof.
There were also repairs to windows and balustrades, investigation of ponding and leakage problems on the townhouse roof, and recommendations for remedial works.

Work included assessment of the support structure that is subject to a severe marine environment, along with an assessment of its capacity in relation to loads imposed by proposed upgrading works.
We investigated structural upgrading to both redress strength loss due to corrosion, and to increase strength where dictated by proposed changes.
We established the maintenance procedures of the existing structure.

Work on this seven-storey apartment building included refurbishment of all facades, including repairs and/or replacement of timber windows, upgrade of external plumbing, replacement of corroded windows, lintels, and application of a membrane coating to external walls.
Corn Exchange/Hotel Nikko, Darling Harbour, Sydney
We undertook the design for structural modifications to and conservation of four heritage buildings fronting Sussex Street, Sydney.
Bridges over Hickson Road, Sydney
Our work included the structural repair, strengthening and restoration of three concrete arch bridges over Hickson Road at Miller’s Point, for Sydney City Council.
The bridges were built in 1910 and have significant heritage value.
Cardno`s input included investigating the condition, undertaking analysis for load ratings, designing and preparing tender documents, tender reports, and construction supervision.

We investigated and refurbished three facades of a commercial building including repairs to concrete spalling on pre-cast concrete panels and external faces of the building and applying a liquid membrane to the parapet cladding.
