Hochschule Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences – the initiator – joined forces with the City of Magdeburg and the bank Stadtsparkasse Magdeburg – as principal partners – to found the operating company Forschungs- und Entwicklungszentrum Magdeburg mbH on 15.07.1997. A former barracks was renovated and upgraded to contemporary standards to create a setting for forging tighter links between science and business.

The purpose of the enterprise is to provide an infrastructure base for up-and-coming, technology-focused companies, concentrating on technology and IT-based disciplines and operational water resources management. It particularly attracts companies with an affinity for the university and those which are keen to be located nearby for ease of recruitment and/or access to expertise:
