Nothing can cause you to lose more sleep than wondering if a silent killer such as asbestos, Zonolite vermiculite or mould lurks in the walls of your family home. These cancer causing construction materials and insulations have been used in home construction over the last 100 years. Asbestos was used as pipe and general insulation since the 1950’s and right up to the end of the 1980’s.Zonolite vermiculite was used as general insulation during the 1980’s and 1990’s. Zonolite vermiculite is an asbestos-laden vermiculite insulation widely used in older neighbourhoods and Indian reserves. It was promoted for use by the federal Government`s Canadian Home Insulation Program (CHIP). It has since been found to contain high levels of a particularly dangerous form of asbestos.
Lead was used in household piping and both indoor and outdoor paints up to the 1950’s and continued to be used in pipe solder right up the 1990’s.
Mould can grow in any home that does not have proper moisture ventilation and left unchecked can destroy a home and make your family very ill.
PCBs are found in house lighting ballasts that were imported into Canada before 1980’s.
These neurological toxins and cancer causing agents become invisible airborne particles which are very dangerous to your family. These toxins must be dealt with by trained professionals specializing environmental abatement and remediation and be properly disposed of once removed. It is highly advised NOT to remove the materials yourself. Disturbing these materials will increase the amount of airborne toxins generated. Children and pets are very sensitive to these airborne carcinogens. Even if you do not have asbestos in your home, ensure your children are safe at their schools. Many schools used asbestos from the 1950’s to the 1970’s to insulate and fire-proof school ceiling tiles. As tiles deteriorate fine dust containing asbestos becomes airborne and can cause harm to your children that may appear later in life as Mesothelioma, lung cancer or asbestosis. Contact your child’s school to ensure they have had the building evaluated for asbestos and have a containment or removal plan.
Reitzel Bros provides a safe method for you and your family to have these materials removed that does not affect the structure of your home. After the toxic materials are removed from your home they are disposed of in a safe and environmentally sound manner. Reitzel Bros. Environmental are one of the few licensed disposal agents in Ontario for PCBs and asbestos. Don’t get fooled by unlicensed companies offering similar services. Non certified disposal can mean these toxins get back into our air or drinking water.
