Zonolite vermiculite was used as general insulation during the 1980’s and 1990’s. Zonolite vermiculite is an asbestos-laden vermiculite insulation widely used in older neighbourhoods and Indian reserves. It was promoted for use by the federal Government`s Canadian Home Insulation Program (CHIP). It has since been found to contain high levels of a particularly dangerous form of asbestos.

Lead was used in household piping and both indoor and outdoor paints up to the 1950’s and continued to be used in pipe solder right up the 1990’s.
