SCADA as a Services
Cloud Hosted SCADA and SCADA-as-a-Service platforms provide small and midsized operators security, hardware, software, and network management capabilities that parallel that of larger companies with dedicated IT departments. Traditional locally managed SCADA Servers and the supporting network infrastructure often require an initial capital investment exceeding $100,000 plus the ongoing expense for software and hardware upgrades, network management, and specialized tech support. For small and medium operators, such a significant investment is often not feasible within project budget constraints.
SCADA-as-a-Service offers an alternate technology with a completely different cost structure. Using cellular SCADA gateways coupled with existing or “off-the-shelf” control system hardware, SCADA-as-a-Service projects can shed the upfront capital costs and lower ongoing operating expenses without compromising service.
While not suitable for all projects, many operations can benefit from replacing private radio networks with commercial cellular networks owned and managed by major providers. Dual SIM cellular gateways offer redundancy that, when combined with a fault-tolerant control system, can provide uptime reliability that exceeds typical locally managed systems.
