Soil testing provides essential information on soil health and baseline nutrient status. It forms the basis for efficient, cost effective use of lime, fertilisers and trace elements. Soil testing is now a key component in Nutrient Management Planning and is playing an important role in ensuring that the loss of nutrients from agriculture to surface water is minimised. IAS Laboratories carry out a full range of testing on soil including, pH, P, K and Lime Requirement. In addition to the standard soil analysis for pH, lime requirement, phosphorus and potassium, a range of specific analyses are available for trace elements, for all soil test requirements, for farmers, ag consultants, research and development and other specialised areas. It is recommended that soils be tested once in every five years to establish soil fertility levels and soil pH.

A sample can be taken from an area of up to 8 hectares (20 acres). Ensuring this area is uniform with regard to soil type, past cropping, lime and fertilizer usage. Fields that have been created by hedge removal may not necessarily be uniform.

Use a stainless steel hand trowel, spade or soil corer to take samples, do not use brass, zinc coated, painted or rusty equipment as these will contaminate samples. All sampling equipment should be clean before starting.

A core of soil 10cm or 4 inches deep is required when sampling ensuring dead grass or dung is scraped from the soil surface before sampling.

Follow a ‘W pattern’ when sampling a field ensuring that you avoid gateways, headlands, ditches, dungpaths and areas where lime, FYM or chemical fertilizer has been dumped or spilled.

One soil sample should be made up off at least 20 separate sampling sites, spaced evenly throughout the field.

A clean plastic bucket is useful to collect all these samples and then when sampling is complete, thoroughly mix the soil in the bucket and from this place 400-500g of soil into a labelled freezer bag.

If there are problem areas in a field which require sampling, sample these separately.

Crop Tissue Testing


To investigate reasons for poor crop growth or animal performance difficulties it is essential to analyse the crops or the herbage being fed. Trace element deficiencies are common in crop production. When mineral disorder problems are experienced in livestock it is recommended that grass, silage or hay being fed is analysed for a range of elements such as copper, molybdenum, sulphur and selenium.
