Storage of Hazardous Wastes

SHARE

A Hazardous Waste Landfill Facility is an installation disposing of hazardous wastes by deposit or burying on or in the ground. The geological and hydrogeological context of the landfill facility must constitute a passive safety barrier. The site is arranged so that this barrier will not be used. Drainage provision including a geomembrane at its base constitutes an active safety level.

According to French regulations, the landfill facility is divided into hydraulically independent compartments of 10,000 m² maximum. A maximum of two compartments can be used simultaneously. This number is increased to three in case of necessity and must then be specified by a prefectoral order. Each compartment is divided into cells.

The placing of stabilized wastes is adapted depending on their physical characteristics. Powder wastes must be packaged or treated to prevent dust blowing away. Wastes are stored in compatible groups in the different cells, or compartments. These compatibility groups are set up under the responsibility of the landfill facility operator.

The landfill facility acceptance procedure for hazardous wastes includes three verification levels:

  1. Basic characterization,
  2. Conformance verification,
  3. On site verification.
