In operation since 1949, INL is a science-based, applied engineering national laboratory dedicated to supporting the U.S. Department of Energy`s missions in nuclear and energy research, science, and national defense.

BEA and Partners

INL is operated for the Department of Energy (DOE) by Battelle Energy Alliance (BEA) and partners, each providing unique educational, management, research and scientific assets into a world-class national laboratory.

Organization

Leading a senior management team of eighteen is Laboratory Director John J. Grossenbacher, a Vice Admiral, U.S. Navy (ret.), a Naval Academy graduate and one of the nation`s most respected leaders. At the time of his retirement from the Navy, Mr. Grossenbacher commanded all United States submarine forces.

INL History

The world`s first usable amount of electricity from nuclear energy was generated in Idaho in 1951.
