Surface Technology Service
The Department "Surface Technology" of the Fraunhofer WKI comprises the whole value chain in the field of the wood coating and resins. This includes the synthesis of innovative binder materials for coatings and adhesives, coating formulations and industrial application tools as well as testing, certification and damage analysis of coatings for and / or on wood. Focal point of the R&D activities is the utilization of sustainable raw materials such as vegetable oils and sugars.
Beside the chemical part of researching into biogenic oils and saccharides, the department for Surface Technology has added a third leg to their portfolio. The synthesis of biotechnologically obtained monomers to resins for coating and adhesives is part of the life science research cluster at Fraunhofer. The capability of serving the entire R&D chain in the development of coating materials qualifies the team to be a competent research partner for SMEs and industry.
