Transport Research Laboratory (TRL)

Sustainable Infrastructure

SHARE

To be sustainable, transport infrastructure needs to address the global challenges of climate change, carbon reduction and energy use whilst being both resilient and safe. To achieve this, it needs to be built and maintained to long-life and sustainable construction principles, embrace appropriate developments in technology and be adaptable to future needs

Most popular related searches

TRL is at the forefront of innovation in these areas, helping clients to create the next generation of infrastructure, embracing technology development whilst seeking to minimise environmental impact. (Forever Open Road and Railway).

We are working to reduce the environmental impact of infrastructure by encouraging resource efficient construction and our research is enhancing the evidence base for the use of low energy and high recycled content materials, reducing vehicle fuel consumption and providing reliable, transparent methods to assess impacts, through whole life cycle assessment (LCA) tools such as asPECT. Take up of innovative solutions that are proven is facilitated through high level engagement and training programmes, such as those that we conduct with the Waste and Resources Action Programme.

TRL can also help transport operators improve resilience to climate change, by identifying vulnerabilities and developing suitable mitigation options, and by matching the right materials to the right applications.

Benefits

TRL clients are helped to find ways to reduce waste, maximise the use of recycled and secondary materials, reduce their overall consumption of raw materials and identify carbon savings.
