Underground Storage Tanks Removal

Several states have published specific guidelines to remove or appropriately close in-place underground storage tanks (USTs). According to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) UST Closure Guidance Manual, “when any UST is permanently closed (removed or closed in-place), Massachusetts law requires that an assessment be performed to determine if contamination is present in the environment.” While the presence of contamination can be confirmed by visual and olfactory observations, the absence of visual and olfactory signs of a release are not clear indications that the Site is free from contamination. Analytical data is necessary to rule out contamination at a UST closure.
