Vehicle Safety
TRL’s vehicle safety scientists and engineers have been instrumental in improving the structural design and integrity of vehicles over several decades. We are also responsible for protecting occupants and other road users in impacts, and developing collision avoidance and warning systems.
With the growing demand for higher standards of sustainability and safety, we are active in the development of new forms of vehicle technologies: from lighter, reusable and recyclable construction materials to HMI and refuelling and recharging technologies.
There is also a rapidly-increasing sensitivity to the cost-effectiveness of safety improvements. Diversification of vehicle fleets and driver assistance and collision avoidance technologies are changing the face of vehicle safety. We can also see a growing emphasis being placed on employee safety on the roads, and employers` duty of care towards other road users.
Our teams undertake new technology impact assessments, risk identification and mitigation. We also provide expert support and advice through evidence-based research. Innovation in research methods and test procedures together with in-depth cost-benefit analyses are the key capabilities that underpin our work.
Our capabilities in the vehicle safety sector include:
- Active safety systems
- Alternative fuels
- Child safety
- Event data recorders and eCall
- Heavy and commercial vehicle safety
- Human injury tolerance and biomechanics
- Modified vehicles
- Noise
- Rail safety
- Structural crashworthiness
- Vulnerable road user protection
The research and consultancy services we provide can range from simple, desk-based reviews of existing knowledge through to complex, original and innovative assessment and development programmes. With TRL`s help, our clients develop safer, more sustainable vehicles - for the benefit of their customers and society at large.
