Waste Packaging
All businesses that supply packaged products on the market in Ireland are required to comply with the Waste Management (Packaging) Regulations 2007 (S.I. No. 798 of 2007). But depending on the quantities of waste packaging you produce per year you will have different obligations under this legislation.
What are these producer obligations?
No matter how much packaging waste you place on the market in Ireland if you produce packaging waste you are required to fulfill the following obligations:
- Segregate packaging waste arising on your own premises (back-door packaging waste) into the various waste streams i.e. aluminium, fibreboard, glass, paper, plastic, steel, wood etc
- Return all used packaging to its producer
- Recover or arrange for the recovery of packaging waste
- Arrange for collection of packaging waste by a suitable recovery operator
However if you produce greater than 10 tonnes of packaging waste per year and have an annual turnover of greater than €1 million then you are considered a major producer of waste packaging under these regulations.
In addition to the requirements outlined above all major producers must also either self comply or register with Repak.
What Class of A Producer am I?
An independent audit of the quantities of waste packaging you place on the market in Ireland per year must be carried out in order to determine what class of producer you are.
