I recently saved a customer $184,000 a year by helping them recycle water, extending water usage to multiple days and identifying some tasks that can be performed with no water at all.
Not only did they save a mighty sum but they are now identified in their community as a company that is substantially helping the environment.
In another example I reduced a client's chemical uses which led to savings of $300,000 in a year--and again our environment benefited as well.
My name is Daniel Theobald, also known as 'Wastewater Dan' and my work is increasingly being recommended by the leading publications in our field.
For example, In Water Today Print Magazine, my article on the topic of Water Reuse was presented in their December 2012 issue: (http://www.esdlt.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/Water-Recycle-and-Reuse-by-Dan-Theobald-in-Dec-2012-Water-Today-magazine.pdf ) My article featured various procedures and technologies to reuse water in specific industries.
Exact Procedures and Technologies used in distinct Industries are detailed in my article below:
· Food Processer – Techniques include recycling water for cooling, Sanitation Departments sanitize with low-flow high-pressure hose nozzles, squeegee during cleaning instead of water & etc.
· Plastic Recycle Washer – Procedures to optimize physical/chemical wastewater treatment and recycle purified water includes chemical addition, pH adjustment & control, ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis, solids handling and more.

Wastewater, pH Balanced for Treatment
Story covered on Water Online E-Newsletter
Interviewer: Okay. Daniel Theobald, the Wastewater Wizard. Thanks for joining me. I’m going to kick it off with this first question. Why is controlling pH a most important procedure in treating wastewater?
Daniel: Well, that’s a good question because the pH of the wastewater is a critical component of the water itself and it directly affects the ability to treat wastewater regardless if it’s physical or chemical treatment or biological treatment. So it’s a very critical component of the makeup of the water and affects treatment.
Interviewer: What needs major attention in controlling pH?
Daniel: Well, first of all, you have to identify the parameters or pollutants or impurities, however you want to describe it, that are actually in the wastewater that require treatment. Then, once you figure out what has to be treated, then you identify the starting pH values and the ending pH values with a specific treatment process. Then after that, you have to identify the appropriate chemicals that are needed to actually treat the waste. So those are the major things that need attention.
Interviewer: Okay. Why does starting and ending pH values affect procedure?
Daniel: Well, it takes residence time and contact time in order for a wastewater treatment, a pH adjustment to occur. So you’ve got a very short range. It requires less contact and residence timing chemicals as compared to having a much wider pH range. So the procedures are affected by the range of the pH that’s been adjusted.
Interviewer: How relevant is chemical selection in controlling pH?
Daniel: It’s very relevant because different chemicals or various chemicals have different reaction times and of course it’s the reaction time of the chemical that has a major effect on the actual pH adjustment and pH controlling. Therefore, the equipment residence time is very relevant in relation to the chemical that’s actually used for the treatment.
Interviewer: Okay. Does the pH change immediately? If not, what are some considerations?
Daniel: Actually, pH virtually never changes immediately. A pH change is affected by the chemical reaction times which is directly associated with the amount of the mixing, the amount of the tank volumes and all of those aspects within the treatment process itself. And so we often can have a pH change after the waste leaves the tank where you’re treating the process. And so sometimes the reaction can be very slow.
Interviewer: Is pH controlled manually or can the pH maintain rigorous precision when it’s automated instruments?
Daniel: Rigorous precision is often required for the necessary treatment and this rigorous precision is almost never achieved when you try to control the pH manually. There are just so many interferences that you almost have to have, the automation for the required pH change and treatment.
Interviewer: Okay. Then finally, can equipment selection influence the overall outcome?
Daniel: Absolutely. The equipment, the instrumentation and their specific procedure uses is most influential. You can have a very wide, very mixing; you can have changes in the injection points, you can have changes in the location of the chemicals, the mixers and the controllers. It’s not only important to have the appropriate selection but it’s also to have the appropriate location and sizing of the equipment. This all affect the overall outcome.
Interviewer: Okay. Thanks, Daniel.
