The quantification of surface water run-off rates is required for many new developments over 250 square metres to ensure there is no increase in downstream flood risk, or provide a reduction in run-off rates for brownfield sites. In addition, the drive for greater sustainability has led to policies such as the Code for Sustainable Homes and Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) gaining prominence.

All work involving surface water has the potential to utilise Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) to store and discharge water. The implementation of the Flood and Water Management Act 2010 sees SuDS becoming the standard method of managing surface water run-off for new developments. Hafren Water can advise on the design of SuDS and carry out soakaway tests and calculations (complying with BRE365) if infiltration techniques are assessed as viable.

Hafren Water provides the following surface water management services:

  • Code for Sustainable Homes SUR 1 & 2 assessment
  • Surface water calculations to establish required storage volumes and discharge rates
  • Surface water calculations to assess the impact of changes to an area
  • Surface Water Management Plans
  • SuDS design input
  • Soakaway tests and calculations (complying with BRE365)
  • Estimation of surface water run-off for rainwater harvesting
