Water quality modeling has become a common tool used in the mining industry to predict the long-term behaviour and changes to water quality from Metal Leaching and Acid Rock Drainage (ML/ARD), as driven by high regulatory standards and stakeholder expectations. Rescan provides water quality modeling services to assess mine drainage and receiving environment water quality at all phases of the mine life cycle, from pre-construction through to post-closure monitoring. Rescan’s team uses several modeling approaches to meet the requirements of our clients depending of the level of complexity required including:
- chemical mass balance modeling using a spreadsheet
- GoldSim computer modeling used for dynamic modeling complex systems
- GoldSim computer modeling coupled with PHREEQC chemical speciation model to model complex time-depend geochemical interaction and changes
The model output can be processed and displayed numerous ways to increase a client’s understanding of the dynamic interactions and complex processes and to provide quantitative answers to challenging mine drainage problems.
