Water Services
Potable water is the life blood of any community. Jones Edmunds has designed water treatment, pumping, and distribution systems with capacities of up to 100 MGD. We excel at designing water distribution systems that alleviate large flow and pressure transients. Our staff also offers quality modeling to support planning and design efforts for water system infrastructure improvements.
Master Planning
Jones Edmunds serves the interests of public and private entities throughout Florida in the areas of water system planning and design. Jones Edmunds has developed water supply, treatment, pumping, and distribution systems throughout Florida, from small systems up to systems with capacities of 100 MGD. Jones Edmunds excels in designing water distribution systems that alleviate large flow and pressure transients. We use state-of-the-art computer modeling software (WaterCAD, WaterGEMs) during design phases to evaluate system performance and to fulfill other design criteria. All modeling programs are located in-house, allowing efficient, cost-effective use of these tools.
Water Supply, Treatment, and Distribution Design
Jones Edmunds serves the interests of public and private entities throughout Florida in the areas of water system planning and design. Jones Edmunds has designed water treatment, pumping, and distribution systems with capacities of up to 100 million gallons per day (MGD). Jones Edmunds excels in designing water distribution systems that alleviate large flow and pressure transients. We apply state-of-the-art computer modeling techniques during design phases to evaluate system performance and to fulfill other design criteria. All modeling programs are located in-house, enabling us to run the programs efficiently and cost-effectively.
Jones Edmunds has designed and administered construction for water distribution systems throughout Florida. Our thorough understanding of pressure system design, comprehensive in-house modeling tools, and expertise in pipe materials creates a team that is highly qualified for distribution system design. Our experience includes ground and elevated water storage facilities and booster pumping system design.
Source Water Characterization
The Jones Edmunds Team is trained and highly-skilled in source water characterization throughout Florida. In order to protect our natural resources, our experts establish a thorough understanding of the information during the analysis phase of water protection programs. Characterization and assessment of the source water is an integral aspect to the realization of the goals set by our clients for source water protection.
Water Transmission, Storage, and Pumping
The Jones Edmunds team has designed and administered construction for water distribution systems throughout Florida. Our thorough understanding of pressure system design, comprehensive in-house modeling tools, and expertise in pipe materials creates a team that is highly qualified in distribution system design. Our experience includes ground and elevated water storage facilities and booster pumping system design. We also have experience in the replacement of galvanized pipe and have been highly involved in galvanized pipe replacement programs, for instance those in the City of Tampa and in Pinellas County. This experience demonstrates our expertise in designing all types of pipe—PVC, ductile iron, concrete, and steel.
Jones Edmunds uses instrumentation and control systems to continuously monitor the performance of the facility designed. Staff members have designed Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems that monitor and control several hundred points at many major pumping stations and other remote sites.
Hydraulic Modeling
The staff at Jones Edmunds has considerable experience with water and wastewater system hydraulic modeling, system evaluation studies, system facilities design, and infiltration and inflow studies. When all of these elements are integrally linked, along with an effective operation and maintenance program, the lowest life-cycle cost is provided for the collection system. In terms of hydraulic modeling, the Jones Edmunds team has experience with nearly every major hydraulic sewer model (e.g., SewerGEMS, SewerCAD, EPA-SWMM, XP-SWMM, MikeSWMM, MOUSE, HydroWorks/InfoWorks, HYDRA, etc.). Our engineers work closely with our GeoSpatial Information Solutions (GIS) Division to develop site-specific population projections, average daily flows, sewersheds, etc. Through this engineering and GIS integration, Jones Edmunds is able to deliver more effective modeling for less. Additionally, our experience reduces the cost of modeling because we know where to focus efforts, how to efficiently go through the model set up, and what to look for to ensure credible model results.
Hydraulic Transients
The Jones Edmunds team has designed and administered construction for water distribution systems across Florida. We excel in designing water distribution systems that alleviate large flow and pressure transients. Our thorough understanding of pressure system design, comprehensive in-house modeling tools, and expertise in pipe materials yields a team that is highly qualified for distribution system design. Our engineers assess the risk to pipeline infrastructure created by hydraulic transients in order to recommend pressure surge control strategies. These practices assist in eliminating the possibility of adverse pressure transients and to maximize usefulness and performance of pump, pipe, and valve infrastructures.
Water Quality
Our team has been involved with a wide range of water quality monitoring relative to the FDEP and EPA TMDL Programs. Our general approach to these services is to first consult with the client regarding your understanding and concerns with the existing data and then perform an assessment on the data. We then determine if there are any deficiencies or weaknesses with the data and the type and extent of monitoring needed to address them. We would only recommend doing additional water quality monitoring when we felt that additional data would have a reasonable chance of positively influencing the outcome and provide a reasonable return on investment.
We are experienced with many types of water quality monitoring and biological assessment, use state-certified staff and labs, and operate in accordance with FDEP’s SOPs. As an example of additional water quality monitoring, Jones Edmunds has performed continuous dissolved oxygen monitoring (graph to the right) for a WBID with a proposed TMDL that does not meet the FDEP and EPA 5 mg/l threshold. There are few anthropogenic sources and a largely natural watershed upstream of these sampling locations. These continuous DO data (and our expertise) helped make the case for a poor DO/nutrient correlation, an unachievable target, and will likely lead us to a “TMDL Not Needed” report and delisting or a Site Specific Alternative Criteria (SSAC).
Pressure Pipeline Design/Piping Selection
Jones Edmunds is also well-versed in various pipe materials and types. Our design professionals also stay abreast of new pipe technologies, such as the use of fusible PVC as an alternative to HDPE for waterline horizontal directional drills. We have recently completed several projects using this new methodology. In tight working quarters, in areas where open cuts of pavement must be avoided, or in areas where crossing of water bodies or wetlands is required, we use trenchless rehabilitation technologies for water and sewer pipelines. These technologies include pipe bursting, slip lining, cured-in-place pipe horizontal directional drilling, jack-and-bore, and other trenchless technologies.
