Wind Measurements Services

SHARE

Key benchmark of a solid economic forecast for a potential wind farm site is the wind speed. In addition to external data sources (meteorological stations, reanalysis data, etc.) we run own wind measurements on project sites.

Since the company was established, SOWITEC development has installed meteorological towers at over 100 project sites in cooperation with local partners. With an average measurement period of two years, we now have an accumulated experience of more than 200 years of measurement operation.

Our wind measurement stations are installed and equipped in accordance with internationally recognized standards (IEC-61400-12-1, Technical directive TR6 of the FGW, VDI 3786). Depending on the requirements, the mast heights range between 60 m and 100 m, sometimes up to 140 m.

Wind speed and wind direction sensors are installed at least at three different heights of the towers. Thus it is possible to evaluate the wind shear and turbulence intensities on site. In addition, climate data such as temperature, humidity and barometric pressure are recorded.

All masts are regularly maintained and the quality of measurement data is checked continuously to ensure the best possible basis for further project development activities.

SODAR
Besides our static measurements (met masts), additional mobile measurement systems are extensively used. Several SODAR devices (sound detection and ranging) are installed for example to support the screening processes, to evaluate vertical wind profiles or to capture and verify small-scale changes in the wind field.
