Athena - Impact Estimator (IE) for Highways
The Athena Impact Estimator for Highways is a prototype LCA-based software package that measures environmental impact of roadway designs. The Athena team is developing a user-friendly LCA tool for pavement designers, now available for free in a demonstration beta version. This tool will meet a new and growing demand for infrastructure sustainability.
Impact Estimator for Highways
The Athena Impact Estimator for Highways provides LCA results for the materials manufacturing, roadway construction and maintenance life cycle stages. It allows custom roadway design, or users can draw from a library of existing designs. The software includes a large materials database and the flexibility to specify unique pavements. Users can input use-phase energy loads, if desired, to be included in the final LCA results. The software allows for quick and easy comparison of multiple design options.
The Impact Estimator for Highways is still under development. It is available for demonstration purposes. The Athena Institute is interested in hearing from potential partners in the further development of this tool for customized needs.
The software tool was developed in association with transportation engineers at Morrison Hershfield, and was funded by Environment Canada, the Cement Association of Canada and the Athena Institute.
