You can configure your own sample types and location types and specify on the fly what data you want to store about each of them. Every location is visually represented, so that free locations and samples are clear from a quick look. Moving a sample to another location can be done with a simple drag & drop action.
Navigating through your sample repository can be done in a hierarchical tree view, or you can use the spreadsheet like filtering that is present everywhere in SLims.
SLims is delivered together with an easy to use barcoding system. This system enables you to easily assign, print & scan barcodes, which can be used for samples, machines and storage locations. This will help your lab to register samples upon reception, easily log the storage location and to quickly register actions performed on your samples.
SLims also features an intelligent Excel© Import/Export engine that lets you transfer all your data from and to Excel©
SLims contains a full featured Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN), which will make it easier to store & find information about ongoing and past experiments/protocols, samples, results, etc. The ELN is tightly integrated with the Sample Management part, so you can easily identify which samples have been used in which protocols and to what results they have led.
The ELN supports organisation into projects, experiments and experiment runs, and you can easily browse running experiments, who is working on what step in the protocol, etc.
You can use the ELN like your regular lab notebook: attach any document (images, movies, data files, ...) and type your conclusions formatted like in a word processor.
New protocols/experiments are created in an easy way, and these can immediately be used in the ELN.
A powerful search tool is included helping you to find the information you require.
SLims allows you to attach and trace any data (including files from external applications) to an experiment form or sample. Attached information can be referenced directly within SLims text fields, allowing for easy, direct visualisation.
Integrate SLims with lab machines, legacy databases, external datasources. Integrate existing command line tools into workflows. Integrate existing web services.
SLims is built to integrate to virtually any system. This ensures direct import of lab machine data to corresponding experiment files. Statistical and analytical procedures can be run (automatically) on the required data. Not only lab machines but also existing databases and systems can be connected to SLims making sure you have all relevant information close at hand.
By using SLims you can manage external orders, track and approve results from one central system. It helps you to organize your daily operations, through for example generating work lists and reporting results in an easy and time-efficient manner.
Samples and tests can be ordered from the order management module. Required data can be entered directly by the customer into SLims.
Orders are organised in the worklist module: organise your daily work, assign tasks to technicians and follow up priority.
Results are entered efficiently in the Order Lab Notebook (OLN), an environment optimized for quick and efficient data entry.
Custom reports can be generated.
Follow up essential quality parameters in SLims' Quality Control (QC) module. Use the real time chart to watch trends and spot outliers immediately.
SLims has been designed with an efficient user experience in mind. SLims runs in any browser, but feels like a desktop application. Spreadsheet style grids throughout the interface allow efficient data submission as you would in your favorite spreadsheet and offer quick filtering on all columns.
Text fields in the electronic lab notebook have rich word processor like editing, and allow attaching arbitrary files. You can even include images and movies into your text.
Repetitive actions in the user interface can be automated by using scenarios, a very powerful feature. You can configure a complex series of actions in a scenario and execute it from the scan module, the sample management module or the ELN module.
Users can customize the look & feel of their SLims instance and their settings are applied as soon as they login. You can indicate which columns you want to see, what colors are used to indicate the current state of samples or protocols.
SLims helps your lab compliance, without effort and stress. The system entails modification tracking, data history storage and version tracking without you having to do any extra administration. The SLims software is 21 CFR Part 11 ready - ISO compliant.
Using SLims improves your lab security. It can be easily integrated with existing authentication infrastructure (Active Directory, LDAP, etc.). SLims' fine grained role management allows you to control user and group access to specific content and actions.
SLims will be available throughout your lab on every web browser by any user. There is no need for installing the software on every different computer.

Customizing logic is possible in a number of ways. SLims has a Groovy scripting engine built into the GUI, allowing very powerful customization of SLims behaviour directly from the interface.
A central design principle of SLims from the very start has been to be open to integration. Integration with your custom tools is possible in a variety of ways.
Most interaction with external tools can be done through SLimsGate. This is an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) based environment allowing integration with external programs, databases, email, lab machines, web services, etc, without programming. For deep interaction with the underlying data model, you can tap into SLimsDAO. This full featured open API allows your programs to access all data without losing the essential SLims features of traceability and security.
SLims is not like your average LIMS. It is a lightweight, highly configurable environment that follows changing requirements effortlessly.
